London International Wine and Spirits Fair

The 2005 London International Wine and Spirits Fair
The London International Wine and Spirits Fair (LIWSF) is undoubtedly one of the most important events in the worldwide wine calendar. 2005 was the 25th anniversary of the event, and some 1,300 exhibitors from every wine producing country imaginable took part over the three days.

Record number of visitors
The 2005 LIWSF also attracted a record number of visitors from the UK and a record number of visitors from overseas. In fact, over the three days, a little over 19,000 visitors came to the Fair. In addition over 500 writers and members of the press from the world over visited the LIWSF to report on market news, new vintages, launches, seminars and awards.

An important feature of the LIWSF is the very real sense of business being conducted between visitors and exhibitors. Everywhere you looked, groups of buyers were sat with suppliers working out orders or tasting new wines and vintages.

Top 100 Vins de Pays Competition
But the true talk of the show was the LIWSF Top 100 Vins de Pays Competition.

This year, as in 2004, the competition was sponsored by the Association Nationale Interprofessionelle des Vins de Table et Vins de Pays (ANIVI).

During the event, internationally renowned judges take time to sample the wines entered and to deliver their verdict of which wines could be labelled as being in the ‘Top 100’.

The No.1 wine
On May 17 the judges announced the Top 100 list of winners in the competition.

We were extremely pleased to learn that not only was les 3 poules wine from Baronnie de Bourgade listed in the top 100 wines, but our Cabernet Franc was awarded the overall winner’s medal - No.1 wine in class in the competition!

Photo below shows Gilles and Ruth de Latude being presented with the winner's certificate.

LIWSF Brochure
The 2005 LIWSF brochure for the event is published just after the fair and in addition to general information about the event itself, it contains full details of all the Top 100 wines. This is compulsive reading for any wine connoisseur.

The 2005 addition of the brochure is shown left, and the photo used also contains a bottle of les 3 poules, and the image on the right shows the les 3 poules entry in the brochure.

Over 500 writers and journalists from all over the world visited the LIWSF. We publish below just a few of the comments from journalists about the Top 100 Vins de Pays Competition.

Tim Atkin at the London International Wine and Spirits Fair

“Very exciting to have a Cabernet Franc from the Languedoc. I love its purity and the label – it’s an enormous pleasure to drink.”

“Very fresh acidity which is a trigger for food, uncomplicated and would sell well in a restaurant. Great label and the wine has clear varietal character.”

Peter McCombie : MW,
Wine Consultant

“A bright, spicy, grassy, lifted nose. The palate is lovely, light and spicy with ripe almost sweet fruit and tannins. Lively acidity.

Charles Metcalfe : Associate Editor of Wine International

“Here is a pure expression of Cabernet Franc, tastes of tobacco, grass. Refreshingly soft, supple and juicy – could be nice also slightly chilled. A summer picnic wine or for a barbecue. All the trophy wines showed well and there were some pleasant surprises among them … an unexpectedly good Cabernet Franc…”
